How heat pumps work & benefits

Modern heat pumps use a refrigeration cycle to extract low-temperature heat and raise it to a useful temperature for heating or hot water. They can heat via radiators, underfloor systems or air convectors and can also provide cooling where specified. Heat pumps are energy efficient — producing several kilowatts of heat per kilowatt of electrical input — and can significantly reduce carbon emissions compared with traditional gas boilers.

Air-Source Heat Pump Installation

MS Renewables mount air-source heat pumps onto walls or fix them into a ground position. The main unit needs a sheltered spot that won’t be impacted by rain, wind or curious passers-by. Installers will check there is sufficient clearance (typically 200mm) for wall-mounted units; floor-mounted systems require significantly more clearance. Installation covers both indoor and outdoor sections, mounted and connected to pipework and refrigerant, then insulated and connected to the central heating system in your Southampton, Winchester or wider Hampshire home — normally through the boiler or radiators.

Ground-Source Heat Pump Installation

Ground-source installations are more complex because excavation may be needed for pipework. Properties with larger gardens can use horizontal ground loops; others use vertical boreholes. Most excavation is permitted development and does not require planning permission unless you are in a conservation area. The buried pipework transfers heat from the ground to the heat pump, which then connects to your central heating circuit.

Prior to installing a heat pump we strongly recommend an energy performance assessment of your property. MS Renewables can carry out the assessment or you may use an independent assessor. The resulting Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) and fabric performance of your home will influence the appropriate heat pump type and expected efficiency. Heat pumps produce heat at lower, steadier temperatures than gas boilers, so good insulation is important for optimal performance. MS Renewables also provides servicing and repair to keep systems running efficiently.
